Residential Builder of the Year
Davies Design & Construction
The two category-winning residential projects entered in this year’s awards program by Davies Design & Construction are both outstanding, and worthy winners within their individual state categories. Not only is the quality of workmanship within them virtually faultless, but the imagination and innovation contributed to both projects by the builder really make them stand out.
Both builds faced challenges (remoteness, weather, rock, snakes) but both also demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the holistic building process – one on a small scale, and one on a much larger scale. In each case there has been an obvious whole of construction team commitment to excellence and a personal dedication from the crew members to getting stuck in to the hard work of striving for perfection. This is evident in the small details as much as in the overall achievement (the timber ladder, the Japanese souji doors).
In both entries external cladding is exquisitely detailed and made, and the construction and detailing of interior materials and of the junctions between them is equally carried out with the highest attention to detail. The builder’s ability to work around difficult sites and to finite budgets has been exemplary.
Blending a command of material use, and a personal touch, with a keen understanding of the cumulative aesthetic impact of material choices, the builder has created unique projects of the highest possible quality. The work entered represents the very best of the builder’s art.

Commercial Builder of the Year
Hansen Yuncken
The two projects entered by Hansen Yuncken in this year’s awards program were clear winners in three categories (Education Facility, Renovation/Fitout – over $10 million/ Commercial/Industrial Construction Award – $50 million to $100 million). The common thread between them is the professionalism of the builder’s approach to the projects, and the outstanding quality of the construction embedded within them. Both projects are at the front end of construction excellence.
Outstanding of the two project is the UTAS Hedburg. This is a world class facility, built to world class standards, and representative of the highest level of engagement from the building team. For it to have been built to the standard it has been, in the time frame that it has been, and for the cost that it has been, all during a global pandemic, is a truly outstanding achievement.
But in each case the scope of the projects, although quite different, is ambitious and technically challenging, and in both cases the builder has responded with a commitment to a collaborative project approach and quite excellent construction quality. Technical challenges have been embraced and the aim has always been to go one step further; to make the projects the very best that they can be. It is the consistent excellence in construction quality and the evident focus on high quality client relationships across these projects that is Hansen Yuncken’s truly outstanding achievement.
