PREMIER Peter Gutwein is committed to building our way out of this economic crisis, and today’s State Budget makes good on that pledge with construction put at the centre of our recovery strategy.
Master Builders Tasmania Executive Director Matthew Pollock said: “Construction will be our economic accelerator and a jobs generator.
“An ambitious agenda for infrastructure investment expanding from $3.6 billion last year to $5 billion over the next four years will boost public investment. Next year’s figures estimate a doubling of infrastructure spending from this year, with $1.073 billion being spent in 2020/21.
“The Budget includes much-needed stimulus and support for commercial construction.
“$10 million in grants under the Building Projects Support program could unlock more than $50 million in private investment, and more than $150 million in related activity across the economy.
“$1 million to support the Office of the Coordinator General to bring major projects back into the pipeline, and $250,000 to deliver the Launceston City deal is exactly what industry has been calling for.
“$3.4 million to support the Land Tiles Office to meet the new timeframes under the government’s new regulatory reforms should speed up land supply.
“Boosted support for the training system and employers, through the $21 million JobTrainer and another $7 million for a Trades and Water (Plumbing) School will give more Tasmanians the opportunity to build careers in construction.
“$2.5 million to support female participation in trades, and $400,000 to enhance industry liaison and will support more women into the construction workforce and benefit as we rebuild our economy.
“$300 million for social housing will ensure we are building a fairer economy and ensuring Tasmanians have access to adequate shelter.
“What is crucial now is that the government meets these ambitious investment targets to accelerate our recovery.”
