Master Builders Election

Master Builders Board Election

The ballot opens Friday 13th September and closes 10.00am Friday 11th October.  The election will be undertaken via postal ballot, and you should be receiving your ballots in your letterbox next week.

Board positions are split into regions and sectors. The Board will be made up of 10 Board members, comprising of:

2 – Southern Region
2 – Northern Region
2 – North West Region
2 – Housing Contractor Members
2 – General Contractor Members

All members from the respective region and member category are eligible to vote for the respective Board positions.

For example, if you are a Housing Contractor member in the Southern Region you get 2 votes, 1 for the Southern Region Board candidates and 1 for the Housing Contractor Board candidates. You can vote for the same person if they are a candidate in more than 1 category.

The election results will be declared at the AGM on the 18th of October.

All candidate bio’s can be found in alphabetical order below.

North Western Region

Two candidates were nominated and the Board positions filled without requiring a vote.

The elected NW Regional Directors are David Gates (Director Design Unlimited) and Vonette Mead (Director Mead Con)

Northern Region

 

John Faulkner – Director Faulkner Building

Left school at the age of 16 and started an apprenticeship with local Launceston construction company, Construct Tasmania.On completing his apprenticeship John worked as a subcontract carpenter for a variety of builders and established Faulkner Building in 1986. He has constructed and renovated a wide range of buildings including homes, schools, nursing homes and shops.

First joined the Master Builders Association of Northern Tasmania in 1988. Served as President from 1993 to 1997 and from 2001 to 2002. Was a driving force behind the establishment of the Tas Builders Group Apprenticeship Scheme which has continued its remarkable growth since both associations joined. Was instrumental in the amalgamation process of the Tas Builders Association and Master Builders Tasmania in 2015.
Elected to Master Builders of Tasmania Board in 2015 and has been the Northern Regional Chair since 2018. 

Currently serves on the Property Committee which oversaw the New MBT headquarters constructed at Cambridge Park in the south of the state and will be advocating for a new Training and Administration Centre for the North of the state. John also sits on the State Housing Committee. 

John is married to Sue and has two adult children. John is a Past President of the Launceston Leo Club (Lions Youth), was involved in his children’s school and sporting activities, including coaching rowing and serving as Chair of the school rowing club.

John is looking forward to serving the Association and especially helping the youth of the building industry develop into Master Builders of the state.

Matt Barwick – Director Barwick Developments

After labouring for 2 years, I started my apprenticeship as a Carpenter Joiner in 2004, completing in 2008. During my apprenticeship, I was awarded the Master Builders Tasmania Apprentice of the Year in 2008.

Following the completion of my apprenticeship, I decided work for myself, sub contracting and eventually taking on projects of my own. After employing my first apprentice, I decided to start up my business, trading as Barwick Developments in 2010.

Since then I have worked in the residential space, and now employ 10 tradespeople including GTO apprentices.

I have been a member of Master Builders Tasmania since the amalgamation of Tas Builders Association and Master Builders Tasmania in 2015. In 2019 I was awarded the Master Builders Young Builder of the Year, and went on to win the National Master Builders Young Builder of the Year.

I currently sit on the State Housing Committee, Chair the Young Builders Network in the Northern Region, judge for the Master Builders Young Builder of the year and Small Builder of the Year and have been training the Certificate 4 for Master Builders in the North for 4 years.

I’m really passionate about the Association and keen for the chance to be part of the Board. My goal is to represent the members in a way that truly reflects their needs and push for a positive direction in the industry. I want to bring my hands-on experience to the table and work with others to make things better for all of us.

 

Tony Streefland – Managing Director Streefland Homes

Tony is passionate about the building industry with his focus being residential construction. There have been and will continue to be issues that can make working in our industry frustrating, however, there are also lots of good and rewarding times and these moments are the ones we should treasure.

Tony’s Bio:

  • 1982 – established and remains director of Streefland Homes in Launceston.
  • 1984 – enrolled as a builder member with MBT.
  • 1985 – appointed to the Northern Regional Management committee and served as chairman for 2 x 4-year terms.
  • 1986 – voted onto the MBT board by the Northern Region.
  • 1986-1999 – participated on Housing Committee as a Board Representative. Resigned from role; however, continued as an active housing member on the State Housing Committee.
  • 2012 – reappointed to MBT board.
  • 2013 to current – appointed Chair of the Housing Committee.
  • 2013 to current – represented Tasmanian housing members on the National Residential Builders Council of Master Builders Australia.

Our industry needs a strong voice for its members at all levels of Government and on the MBA board, as we will continue to have challenges, as well as opportunities that need representation.

Tony would appreciate members continued support as he feels he can still make a solid contribution for you all.

 

 

Andrew Kilpatrick – Director Kilpatrick’s Joinery

Andrew Kilpatrick heads Kilpatrick’s Joinery, a long-established Northern
Tasmanian based commercial and domestic joinery manufacturer which specialises
in traditionally made solid timber joinery and specific building works.
The company Kilpatrick’s Joinery have been MBT members since 1984.

Andrew’s father, Arthur, started the company in 1961 and the pair worked together
for many years until Arthur’s sudden death in 1991.
Since then, including a major re-build after a devastating fire, Andrew has led the
company to what it is today.
Andrew’s son Ed, a third generation Carpenter Joiner, is the company’s
current Production Foreman.

Andrew & his wife of almost 40 years, Kate, are parents of 3 and grandparents to 5.
Andrew was involved with his children’s school and sporting activities including
being rowing club President.

Andrew is a keen Rotarian of over 35 years and a Paul Harris Fellow. He has been a
Director of his club for many years. Rotary Overseas Member, works supervisor
twice on Rotary projects in Samoa, repairing buildings & cyclone proofing. Now incoming President of the Rotary Club of Launceston.

Andrew’s involvement with MBT started by attending meetings for his father.
Over time Andrew has sat on many MBT committees and currently is a State Councillor and member of the Northern Management and Housing Committees. He is now looking forward to continuing his involvement, while promoting the Northern region and helping direct the
association in supporting all MBT members.

Southern Region

 

Lyndon Fenton – Director Kineticon

I am delighted to stand for election to the Master Builders Tasmania Board again. I would like to thank members and staff for their support in my roles over recent years.

Having served over the years as Southern Regional Chair, Southern Management Committee member, Housing Committee member, State Council member, State President, and Treasurer of Master Builders Tasmania, it has been a fantastic experience to learn and my give in these roles. I thank MBT for the opportunity for both personal and professional growth and for putting confidence in me.

Having been a member for 21 years, I’m happy to say MBT is a fantastic organisation and is evolving into a modern association that offers so much. I have seen a lot of things happen in our organisation and the industry, with lots of work to do and this shall continue.

I am a Housing member and being a member of MBT represents the opportunity to come together and build on our community, our solidarity and our sense of belonging.

Clive Williams – Director D Williams Builders

I believe that by fostering excellence in the construction industry, we can create sustainable, safe, and thriving communities that benefit future generations.

Representing the longest standing member of MBT at more than 130 years of active membership; I have a strong drive to support and serve the organization and its’ members in gratitude and recognition for the support that MBT has provided to me personally and past generations at D. Williams Builders.

Monique Litte – Project Manager Stephen Little Constructions

In my role at Stephen Little Constructions (SLC), I am responsible for project management, business and people management. We are primarily a formwork subcontractor, working in the commercial and civil sectors in Southern Tasmania.

I am a passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion and have volunteered on the Tasmanian branch of the National Association of Women In Construction (NAWIC) committee since its establishment in 2016, including terms as Vice-President and President respectively.

At NAWIC, I have been particularly focused on advocating for gender equity and successfully lobbied state government for the development of a ‘Modern Workplace’ accreditation framework and have consulted on the development of a Women In Building & Construction Strategy. As President, I led the collaboration with Master Builders Tasmania, including the establishment of the MOU between organisations and the development of the scholarship for women to complete their builders license.

I will bring to the board a fresh perspective, experience in advocacy, strategy and areas specific to the commercial construction sector.

Lucy Perry – Director Fox Freight Logistics

I am a project manager in residential construction and co-owner of a freight business in Tasmania that services the construction industry. Over the last three years, I have had the privilege of serving on the Master Builders Tasmania Board and chairing the Housing Committee, where I’ve been actively involved in addressing key industry challenges and advocating for positive change.

With hands-on experience from both the construction and logistics sides of the industry, along with my Certificate IV in Building and Construction, I bring a practical and dynamic approach to solving the issues builders face today. I’m passionate about representing the Southern Region and ensuring that Master Builders Tasmania continues to support its members through innovation and growth.

As a young woman working in and owning a small business, I offer a fresh perspective and am committed to contributing my knowledge and experience to help shape the future of our industry.

Nick Silcox – Team Leader Hutchinson Builders

Nick leads the Tasmanian division of Hutchinson Builders in his role as Team Leader. Hutchinson Builders are Australia’s largest family owned builder and have enjoyed a wonderful association with the Master Builders, both in Tasmania and throughout the other states of Australia.

Hutchies have been members of Master Builders Tasmania since undertaking our first project in Tasmania in 2010. Since then, Hutchies have delivered over 180 projects across the state, ranging from house extensions to large commercial projects in the Hobart CBD.

Nick sees the commercial construction industry having to adapt to change driven by a whole range of factors, whether it be legislative change, evolving procurement objectives, changes in building standards, proliferation of imported building products or industrial relations. Nick is passionate about ensuring Tasmania stays ahead of this curve and continues to uphold it’s reputation for punching above it’s weight.

Nick has served as a committee member on the Master Builders Tasmania Commercial Sector Committee since 2017.

John De Jong – Director De Jong and Sons Constructions

• Director of De Jong and Sons Constructions for 35 years
• Involved in the industry for 40 years
• Hold a Degree in Architecture and a Registered Architect
• Previous MBA Tasmania Board member from 1991 to 2001, 2023-present
• MBA Tasmania State President for 1995-1997 and represented Tasmania on the MBA national board.
• Current member of the North-West Committee and actively involved in month meetings
• Passionate about training and currently the businesses we run employ 14 apprentices
• Passionate about working with State and Local Government to see processes streamlined to reduce red tape which will reduce build costs.
• Continue to see the MBA Tasmania actively involved in working with Government to nurture the industry for the future.

Outside of the industry and the MBA I have Board involvement in the following:
• Board Chair of Respect Aged Care, which is operating in residential aged care, home care and retirement living through South East Australia
• Board member of Leighland Christian School
• Board member of Christian Education National, a National umbrella organisation for Christian Schools in Australia

Will Davies – Co-owner and Director Cunic Homes

I’m seeking to be elected to the Master Builder Tasmania Board because I want to have greater involvement in strategic matter that affect our industry.

Having worked on project homes, multi-residential developments and social housing project; I’ve experienced a range of issues and challenges associated with project delivery.

I believe my knowledge and experiences put me in a good position to provide valuable input in policy matters and the strategic direction of our industry and Master Builder Tasmania.

I would be grateful for the opportunity to work as a Director on the MBT Board and it is not a role I would take for granted.

I also like long walks on the beach, 80’s power rock ballads and terrible dad jokes.

Ash Beardwood – General Manager Beardwood Pty Ltd

As the General Manager of Beardwood Pty Ltd, Ash oversees the operations of a team of over 70 employees. With more than 18 years of experience in the construction industry, Ash brings a deep well of knowledge and leadership to his role. He is responsible for managing strategic initiatives, ensuring operational excellence, and maintaining high standards across all projects. His extensive background in building surveying, including certification, assessment and compliance, plays a crucial role in the company’s continued success.

Ash is keenly interested in joining the Master Builders Tasmania Board to contribute to the advancement of the construction industry at a broader level. His goal is to leverage his experience and expertise to support and influence industry standards, advocate for innovative practices, and address key challenges facing the sector. Ash is passionate about fostering collaboration and driving improvements that benefit both the industry and the community. His leadership and vision align with the board’s mission to promote excellence and sustainability in building and construction.
